One of the most interesting and timely advice that Jesus gave to his disciples was, “keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Mark 14:38, NASB. This advice was given ahead of the approaching  “time of the reign of darkness.” Luke 22:53, NIV. It was given in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before the betrayal, arrest, false trial, and crucifixion of Jesus. Unfortunately, the disciples did not take the advice of Jesus seriously. That Thursday night they did not keep on watching and praying. Thus when the reign of darkness came, Peter fell into temptation and nine of the other disciples fled, leaving Jesus with his enemies.
Like the first set of disciples, we too are approaching a time when darkness will reign. Soon “the angels holding back the four winds,” (Revelation 7:1), will let them loose. Soon, “the time of trouble such as never was,” (Daniel 12:1), will be upon us. Soon we too will be faced with greater personal and global challenges. Let us heed the words of Jesus, “keep on watching and praying so that you will not fall into temptation.” Come and join us every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. for our prayer service. Come ... let us watch and pray.
